In relation to his talk with the cadets
As plebes, we were taught to follow orders without question, whether they were legal or illegal. We were taught that orders come from the finest minds of generals who have been present in battles. If the order was illegal, we were taught to take it as a challenge and find a way to comply without violating any rules or laws.
This training created self-leadership in us, as we learned to lead ourselves by creating limits and rules within ourselves, which is the essence of discipline. Although we were not allowed to question orders, we were also taught to process them and devise a plan or strategy for compliance, especially for orders that were out of our bounds. Lack of resources, time, and essential elements to comply with orders gave us sensitive thinking.
Our answer was to do our best to comply, find resources, and find time, which was the challenge. In war, we do not always have all the resources, necessities, and time to comply with our tasks. A self-leader initiates by devising their actions, making them as reliable as possible. If an order is unclear, a self-leader takes the initiative. It is the first aspect of leadership that a leader must master, with no buts or ifs, just matching accordingly.
To lead your men, it's essential to have basic skills. We should constantly develop our skills, including the various skills and knowledge we acquire in our lives, no matter how insignificant they may seem. Remember that skills can perish, so it's important to keep an eye on them. Keep expanding your mind and learn how to learn. Strive to be better today than you were yesterday. Be prepared for any challenges that may test your skills and position, as this is what our subordinates observe.
